Like many have already said: I would have been very nice to have V.8 in-game, in particular in VR (which is how I fly exclusively).
But I am so accustomed to (or dependent on?) the current VR Navigraph window, I simply keep using it. I liked it before, and I like it now - after all, it has not changed. Let’s not get too worked up over the new features we can’t yet have in VR!
I hope auto-insertion of plates can be done soon - that would be a nice first step.
And the way I know Navigraph, more steps will follow…
Bringing external apps into the Sim is - besides being a crappy workaround - unfortunately also not possible for all users, as it depends on your headset hardware/software. The Varjo Aero folks for example will not have a way to do this.
It is understandable that there are technical limitations on the Sim side here. Other apps are partly working around it by having an external server process running that does all the heavy lifting and then provides the ready-to-use data to an ingame panel. The new VSR (Vatsim-Radio ingame panel) comes to mind, which is also capable of displaying live maps and even renders Vatsim planes on it using a Leaflet map on the ingame panel, where all data processing however is being done in an external process so that it doesn’t affect and isn’t limited by what the sim can do performance wise.
I guess many VR flyers would be happy to receive at least a partly updated ingame panel which has some much needed usability improvements around automated chart selection/pinning, more intuitive/quicker access to loading flightplans (why is this a cumbersome 3-4 click procedure instead of a simple import-from-simbrief-button?).
And of course it’d be great to have access to the VFR charts - even if they don’t use the new Charts 8 technology, is there a way to bring those in “Charts 7 style”?
Not familiar with the Varjo personally, but can’t it use SteamVR applications such as OVRDrop to bring applications into VR? And it should be able to use FSDesktop, as that is a in-game panel in MSFS capable of “streaming” and interfacing with any open windows application.
But I totally agree with you, having tried multiple of these solutions, all of them have drawback that make them in the best case cumbersome and slow to issue, and in the worst cases impossible to use. A native solution will always be better is my experience.
I would like to add my voice to those that would like to see the in game panel have some of the features of V8 - I’ve been a very happy subscriber for 6 months and was looking forward to VFR and the pinning features.
However, I appreciate all that has been said by Navigraph and hope that something can be done by the boffins
could this work? navigraph desktop client should run its own webserver, convert vector images to png/dds/jpg (quality and performance option) in vram an display the result in in-sim panel (just like littlenavmap does)
I suggested this as well (although not as specific as you) but they didn’t reply to it. Would be nice if Navigraph could at least indicate if “possible”, “not possible”, “looking into it”
This looks like a tremendous update, but boy this news is a major let down. As a VR user, I was looking forward to using the VFR maps within MSFS. The Reverb G2 works great, but it doesn’t let me bring in external apps like I did with the Rift. Having built in Navigraph was what I had hoped for. Flying IFR is one thing and Navigraph works great for that, but VFR and VR go together like a good steak and red wine. I hope we find a work around some day. Thanks again for your hard work on this update.
Thought I’d post this as a temporary workaround if it might help someone… I’m also not able to import the Charts app into MSFS on the G2 for some reason but it’s possible to open an Edge browser and load the Web version of Charts. One of the pains is having to hit Win+Y to shift focus between the browser and MSFS but you can assign that keystroke to a button on your yoke, joystick, controller etc using free mapping software such as AntiMicroX.
It takes a bit of getting used to, it’s far from ideal and occasionally the browser crashes but it’s the best workaround I’ve found that doesn’t require me to remove my headset in flight. Hopefully, the clever people at Navigraph figure out how to incorporate version 8 as an in-game panel soon.
You beat me to it. Yes, this does work. WMR natively allows the insertion of Apps into VR. And the mouse can be used to position and re-size their windows. It works fine for me with Navigraph 8 Charts displayed in Edge. You can interact with all the features just as you would on the Desktop. Having said that, Navigraph’s panel integration – currently only available for v7 – is much smoother. As you say, you’re constantly having to click Win+Y then alt-tab between MSFS and the Edge App - something I’ve got programmed into the Mouse to make it less painful. And note that this solution seems to cost 2-3 FPS, and getting focus/moving/re-sizing the Edge window can be clumsy.
As a new subscriber I’m pretty disappointed to see that the in-game panel isn’t up to date…I play on an Ultrawide with only a single monitor and alt-tabbing to look at the charts is very disappointing.
I’ve tried running this on my iPad as well, the battery gets absolutely slaughtered as it’s an iPad Pro 12.9 with the M1 chip…much easier to do this from the in-game panel instead of fiddling with my iPad all the time and having to pause the game, etc…
Yeah, I’ll just keep using the older version. No big deal. It’s not like Navigraph intentionally set out to screw people out of this feature, and you guys would be glad to implement it if you could. The older version still works for me just fine. I don’t spend a lot of time with the charts, anyway. Just to get the basic info quickly.
I cancelled my subscription in spring this year when I switched to VR. My focus in VR changed from IFR to VFR.
I was looking forward to the update.
I understand that there are technical issues here. And I guess developing resources are limited and focussing the development on the larger target group rather than VR niche is understandable.
I‘m really looking forward to updates of the in game panel and will come back to Navigraph when this is done.
You should have stopped after, ‘Thanks for the clarification.’ Because the message was clear, concise and jargon-free, explaining exactly why the in-game GUI is not doable at the moment. When a developer takes the time to clearly explain something, there always seems someone, somewhere for some reason who wants to whinge. Little wonder most of them avoid providing too much information. Well done Navigraph on both fronts. Developing the new version and explaining to us why it can’t be included in-game at the moment.
Well, based on the fact that this thread appears to be the fastest growing, and looks to be the second largest on these forums, within a few days, it seems that a lot of customers do not agree with you.
Secondly, Navigraph have confirmed that this was not handled the best of ways, so not only are a large portion of users in disagreement with you, but the developer themselves partially agrees with our sentiment in this thread.
If you want to call that winging, fine. I think most users in this thread would disagree with you.
Nothing I can add that hasn’t already been said, but for the numbers and as a fellow VR pilot I’m bitterly disappointed to learn that the in game panel won’t be updated.
Was looking forward to auto chart pinning and VFR maps and to now learn this won’t be available isn’t really acceptable.
This is NOT what we are saying. We are saying we cannot update it right now, for the reasons discussed in this thread. We are researching workarounds. We have not given up.
The solution to this problem is easy: Don’t force update to Charts 8 and let those that use VR continue to use Charts 7 until the issue with the in game panel is solved in Charts 8. The forced update is what really upsets me the most. I understand when things don’t go as you planned on the technical side but to FORCE people that rely upon a feature you KNOW isn’t going to work to upgrade…that is just insane and inexcusable.
