Possibly since recent XP12 update (12.1.03) I have noticed that my aircraft symbol is being drawn in moving maps offset from actual position. This was not previously the case. Even zoomed in to airport layout level the symbol used to sit very accurately on the map.
I believe it is a drawing issue as the symbol seems to be a similar number of pixels offset whatever the ‘zoom level’. In other words I might show up between a pair of parallel taxiways (rather than on one of them) but then when zoomed out in cruise the same drawing distance offset which would equate to a few hundred meters off the magenta course.
In addition, if I activate the VATSIM overlay my own aircraft symbol from VATSIM (not from XP12 via Simlink) is very accurate, and sits alongside the moving maps triangle symbol.
Hello! Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the late response. This post went under our radar.
What platform are you using when you see this issue? Our web app? Desktop? iOS? Android? Do you see the same offset everywhere?
Kind Regards,
Malte
Hello Malte. The issue was on the Android app and was not location specific. Since I reported the issue there have been two updates of the charts app from the Playstore and also at least two updates to the Simlink plugin for XP12. After these updates the issue no longer occurs.
Interesting! Thank you for the update.
@WebMaximus also has this issue on Android, even with the latest update. Our current internal hypothesis is that this has something to do with the Map scale settings in the app. This is purely based on this screenshot by @WebMaximus :
Here, the ownship icon looks way too big, indicating that there might have been an issue while scaling it to fit the overall map scale.
Have you used the map scale settings before?
Kind Regards,
Malte
To comment on this, I used 150% IIRC but already tried going to 100% where the issue persisted.
What WebMaximus is seeing is similar to what I saw (although my ownship icon was always offset to the north of my real position. I’m currently on Android v 8.38.3 and I’m currently in a flight and my ownship icon was highly accurate on the ground and is now looking good in the air.
I’ve never moved the map scale from 100% and Mercator projection.
Thank you for the additional insights! So far, the only thing we can say for certain is that this seems to be related to Android, and not necessarily tied to any specific simulator (@WebMaximus is using MSFS).
We shall look further into it. If you find any further interesting details or find a reliable way of reproducing the issue (we have not yet been able to), please let us know!
Just did another test and to me, it seems the issue somehow is related (or at least affected) by the zoom level. The further you’re zoomed out, the bigger the discrepancy will be between your aircraft and the projected route as seen in the screenshots below. This is with scale set to 100%.
Also as seen in the last screenshot, using the web-based Navigraph Charts service, everything is fine and the own aircraft is exactly where it should be.
As for repro the issue, it seems to happen on every flight I do. So over here, it’s very easy to repro
Jokes set aside, below is the route I’m flying. If that could help you try mimic the same thing. Can’t see how it would be related, but as mentioned before, I’m doing all my flying in the iFly 737 MAX in MSFS2020 and all flying online on Vatsim.
What projection are you using?
Mercator. Having said the issue was fixed following recent app and Simlink updates it occurred again over the past weekend. Each time it did, the ownship icon seemed too large and was offset from the real position - irrespective of how close I zoomed in. Each time, a simple restart of the app fixed it.
Thank you! My post was aimed at @WebMaximus . Apologies, that probably wasn’t clear! You already mentioned your projection, so we’re trying to narrow things down even further.
This also seems to align with our current expectations on this issue, even if we have yet to reproduce it. Thank you for the input!
Mercator, never touched that setting.
Could you both try the globe projection? I know its experimental, but it is a progressive projection that transitions from globe to mercator when you zoom in. Would be interesting to see if that affects the situation at all.
Just tried and below is the result. Maybe slightly better where the own aircraft icon isn’t as far off from the course as before but still not great.
Hello! Sorry for the lack of response.
We can reproduce this to a certaIn extent internally, and we will investigate it as soon as resources become available.
Kind Regards,
Malte
