Charts 8 app considerably slower since last update 8.33.0

Hi,

Since the last update which adds Annotations, my iOs app is considerably slower in certain areas, for example opening IFR plates or changing a procedure in the Flight tab. Running an iPad 5th gen with iPadOS 16.7.6. I was wondering if others experience this as well.

Best Regards,

Hello! Thank you for the feedback.

We do not see any reason for this on our side. However, both of your examples are heavily tied to your network connection, so any changes in your internet speed would easily have this result.

Perhaps you or someone else on the network were doing some heavy downloading and/or streaming in the background? Is the issue still there, and if so - what results do you get on speedtest.net?

Kind Regards,
Malte

Hi,
I have noticed the same. Since updating the app earlier this week, the overall functionality is noticable slower. Changing Charts and opening menus feels laggy. For example, having a flight plan loaded with chart tabs on shortcut at the buttom, when clicking on the airport code to open the airport sidebar, now takes about 5 seconds. This was at ca. 1 second before the update.
Coincidently, I’m also running on a 5th gen ipad on 16.7.5.
Best regards.

Nothing has changed on my side regarding the internet connection. I don’t stream or download large files while flying/using Navigraph. Speedtest on the iPad running the Charts 8 app results in 400Mbps download 180 Mbps upload. My PC connected by ethernet is at 950Mbps up and download speed to that same test server. I don’t think it is the internet connection because the lagging of the Charts 8 app is consistent regardless of what is using the connection.

Best Regards,

Thank you for the additional feedback guys! It sounds like the issue is not network-related then.

We have not experienced any slowdown ourselves, so at the moment this is quite a hard issue to track down, unfortunately… We shall try to investigate!

Kind Regards,
Malte

I too am having this same issue.
Everything from loading times to zoom in/out and overall usage
has slowed down to a crawl.
My iPad is a bit older then some of the folks have mentioned they have, but I had no issues at all like what is being reported here until this last update.

(Edit)

The app is also crashing alot, especially when using the weather tab.
The app is pretty much a hinder now to use and the lack of response to zooming and moving of the map by hand is extremely latent.

Which iOS version and iPad generation do you use?

iOS is 12.5.7

iPad is iPad Air

I’ve never had an issue with it until this update and I update every time you have released a new version.

I see, thanks for the additional information!

Apple considers your device vintage hardware, and before April 29th we will likely have to drop support for iOS 12 due to enforced SDK updates by Apple.

We’ll try our best to find a reason for the slowdowns before then, but so far we have been unable to reproduce any slowdowns on any of the team’s available test devices so it’s not looking too good, unfortunately.

I’ll keep you posted!

Kind Regards,
Malte

I’ve the same problem with my S6 lite Tablet…after the latest update with the map drawing feature it’s so slow, that you can not use it anymore. Please fix this.

Unfortunately I can confirm this too with the latest update (map drawing feature).

I’m running the Navigraph Charts App on a Samsung A8 with the latest update both for Android and Navigraph itself.
While the A8 is not a beast in terms of performance the app always performed reasonably well. With the latest update each charts take ~ 10 seconds to load and I’m often unsure if I missed a clickspot because nothing happens.
This happens for every chart, so without actually using the new draw function, but rather just viewing the charts.

Cheers,
Philip

Same here, I’m using a Samsung S7 Tablett. After the latest update, it’s slower then before. The development goes into the wrong direction

Hello everyone! I moved your posts here since this does seem to be an issue related to the latest release and not any specific platform.

Thank you for the additional input! Our latest status in this topic remains valid.

Kind Regards,
Malte

As you can see, I’m not the only person having this issue, so this has nothing to do with what hardware we are using. My iPad still runs all my apps with no issues and until your latest release, I’ve not had an issue with my iPad using your app.

It has to do with the hardware, but not in the way that it may seem!

The reason behind the slowdowns is likely greatly worsened when the app is running on older hardware. None of the team members are running iPads that can’t update past iOS 12, so we don’t have comparable hardware to work with, unfortunately. Apple no longer supports such hardware or software in any way, so we can’t even run iOS/iPadOS 12 in a simulator anymore.

That said, we can see a very slight slowdown, from around 500ms to a second in some interactions. This is what we are currently trying to track down, in the hopes that the source is the same as the one causing your slowdowns!

Sorry for the inconvenience! We’ll try to track this down, but initial investigations have been unsuccessful in narrowing down the list of potential causes.

Kind Regards,
Malte

Well then can you make the older version that was just replaced so people like me can go back to the version that worked just fine as it is.

I appreciate the new features you’ve added, but if it slows the app to a crawl, what good is it for me and others experiencing the same issue?

I would be fine if I had to stick with the older version for the foreseeable future because I’m not going to go out and buy a new iPad just so your app runs properly!

Don’t worry, as mentioned we are already looking into this to try and find the reason behind the slowness!

The update works fine on the vast majority of all supported devices, so we are not going to roll back our update. Instead, we’ll try to find and fix whatever is causing this drop for you guys! Sorry for the inconvenience, please bear with us while we continue our investigation.

Kind Regards,
Malte

Hi, unfortunately I also noticed the slowdown of the application on Lenovo Tab M10 Plus 3rd Gen. I also have a problem opening the map selection button and the filter button.
Good luck with finding a solution😉

Edit
On an old Samsung s10e smartphone, the app works well

Similar trouble on a 2019 (IIRC) Samsung Galaxy Tab A (Model No. SM-T510).

Selecting charts, switching between charts on the pinboard, etc., all very slow. Adding a chart to the pinboard is also very slow (~5-10 seconds). When new charts load, they also seem to flash the previous chart back up before eventually loading the selected one a few seconds later.

Loading a flight (and populating the pinboard) always was slow (but acceptable) and seems to be maybe slightly slower.

Many of these were issues I had with the app but accepted knowing that my tablet is a bit old and I don’t have much desire to upgrade it anytime soon.

Interestingly, the latest app (literally downloaded it 5 minutes ago) is butter smooth on a 10 year old laptop, but said laptop doesn’t have nearly the same utility as an EFB as the tablet does.

We believe we have found a way to restore some performance, and are working on a patched version.
Since we can’t reproduce the 5-10-second delays reported here, it is hard for us to know if the patch will fix the issue completely but I will let you know when the update is released so that you can try it out!

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,
Malte
