METAR - Flight Category Layer INOP

I cannot get the METAR Flight Category layer to function on either my iPhone or iPad. The layer simply does not appear when toggled on. Toggling on/off/on does nothing. All other METAR layers appear to work but are intermittent. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and logged out/in which did nothing.

ETA : wind layer appears inop as well.

Hi,

Yes, we have noticed this too and are investigating. It might be requiring an app update so it can take a few days to get weather in a complete state again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kind regards,

Stephen

Thanks for the response and update.

This should now be fixed! Let us know if you can confirm.

Kind Regards,
Malte

Thank you for looking into it. Quite a few missing (M) data points in the northwest US.

Do they show up if you zoom in? The source data comes from NOAA, so it would be peculiar if data was missing in the US

They do not. I was only focusing
on the NW US but it’s more widespread across the US. The the behavior of this layer is unusual compared to normal. Who knows?

Hmm. Can you list a few airports that seem to be missing? Feel free to compare against aviationweather.gov!

Ah, I think I understand what you mean now!

Currently, the “Flight category” layer is a combination of two things: the flight category (indicated by color) and sky coverage (indicated by the icon). This can be a bit confusing since the M just means that no sky coverage data is available in the report!

In the next version that is due for release soon, we will split these layers up so that the flight category map will look something like this instead:

I hope that will make it work like you expect!

Kind Regards,
Malte

Malte,

Thanks for the explanation and responsiveness.
