Is the KJFK RNAV 13L approach miscoded?

I can’t select the RNAV 13L Z approach in the FMS. This is the approach I’m expecting to fly: https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/2102/pdf/00610RZ13L.PDF

There is an RNAV 13L approach I can select, but it doesn’t correlate to the chart. Here’s the CIFP code block:

Doing a bit of Googling, this looks like an AR RNP13L approach. I don’t see the chart for this in Navigraph Charts.

Thanks

Hi Kevin,
there are two main reasons why the RNAV (GPS) Z 13L approach is missing is in the default database:

  1. the missed approach starts prior the runway-threshold and such situation can´t be coded in the standard ARINC dataset of our provider (yellow marker)
  2. this approach contains a visual part from LEISA on (orange marker)

Therefore not included, sorry - but anyways, due the visual segment - you can fly these approach manually and/or you can set the waypoints also manually in the FMC. All waypoints must be included.

Hope that helps,
Richard

Thanks for the explanation Richard. Is it possible to add the AR RNP 13L chart to the Navigraph Charts app?

Any chance to get the chart for RNP 13L at JFK added?

I see no RNP AR 13L at approach at KJFK, either in the r/w Jeppesen chart app or in the FAA NOS chart database.

If such an approach exists, it would be a private procedure which is designed, certified and literally “owned” by an individual airline and can only be assigned and flown by that airline. If that is the case, Navigraph could not publish the chart even if they had access to it.

A similar situation exists at Memphis KMEM - there are several procedures there which only available to FedEx aircraft and do not appear in any public AIRAC database or chart app.

Thanks for the thorough reply! I wasn’t aware airlines had their own approaches, that’s interesting. I did find one through google and now that I look closer it is marked as a JetBlue approach.

The odd thing is using my Fenix A320 I was able to choose it as an approach in the FMS. There was an option for 13L RNAV Z (the published one) but also just RNAV 13L which matched up with the JetBlue RNP I found online. So it seems like it’s in the database. But no published chart makes total sense now that you’ve explained it.

I found the chart you referred to online. Indeed this is a JetBlue “owned” procedure. Jeppesen does publish the chart, but it is only made available to JetBlue clients, and is not part of the public Jeppesen chart database.

In the case of a “private” procedure like this, the airline will directly contract with the FAA to certify the procedure, and to reimburse the government for the costs associated with doing so.

The r/w controllers at JFK are of course aware of the procedure, but cannot and will not clear any aircraft other than JBU to fly it.

A typical RNP AR approach will contain the phrase “AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED” in the chart notes, which indicates the aircraft must be properly equipped to fly it, and the flight crew must have specific training.

The RNP 13L approach at JFK has an additional chart note: “USE OF THIS PROCEDURE REQUIRES SPECIFIC AUTHORIZATION BY FAA FLIGHT STANDARDS”. That is the indication that it is a private procedure that is only available to certain operators.
