In-game panel in MSFS 2024 is slow when loading maps

Hello,

The in-game panel for MSFS 2024 is slow when loading maps (panning, zooming, etc.). It’s slow to the point where I find it INOP/unreliable. The problem doesn’t occur when using the Charts app on the same machine. I also haven’t noticed the issue in MSFS 2020. It seems to be specific to MSFS 2024.

Hello! Thanks for the feedback.

There is zero functional difference between the panel for 2020 and 2024 when it comes to the map. The only difference between the two lies in how the “Export flightplan to simulator” feature works. This means that what you are seeing is, with great certainty, MSFS2024 being heavier to run for your PC than 2020!

When you run the in-game panel, it has to share resources with the simulator. One will always be limiting the other. In contrast, the app (or website) does not have this limitation and thus continues to run well!

Unfortunately, there is not much we can do in this case other than apologize for the inconvenience - we have always recommended running Charts outside of the simulator for several reasons, performance being one of the main ones!

Kind Regards,
Malte

Running charts outside the simulator isn’t a viable solution in VR. There is plenty of headroom on the cpu overall. I understand that msfs has a bottleneck on the main thread but I’d expect the intake panel to run outside the main thread similar to how browsers run each tab in a thread. I’m cpu bound on both 2020 and 2024 but 2024 is noticeably different. I can experiment with lowering settings but perhaps there is room to collaborate with adobo on how threads are managed for add ins especially if this is running in the main. My cpu is about 23 percent utilized and gpu is coasting around 85 percent. The game is running without stutters and the add in is noticeably delayed compared to the sim overall.

That’d be amazing!

I realize that using VR limits your options. AFAIK, there are options available that can bring in external applications as windows into your simulator, but it has been a while since I tried doing so myself so I can’t go deeper on that subject unfortunately! Perhaps worth investigating?

I can, however, safely say that we have not made any changes that would have made the map slower in MSFS2024. In fact, the Charts portion of the panel (map, flights, anything) is 100% the same code as the panel for MSFS2020. The difference lies in the integration with the simulator, which sits outside of the charts app and is never used unless you export your flight. I can’t speak to the resource usage directly other than mentioning that it most likely isn’t as simple as how many % is used by the simulator etc.

It is unfortunate that the simulator environment is limited in this way. Unfortunately, there is nothing that Navigraph can do to change how the panels are handled in the simulator - and it would likely be hard for Asobo too, considering that they use a framework (Coherent GT) to handle this for them. Not sure if it is even feasible to get it to run differently - I am not a game developer

I didn’t see the problem on a flight this evening in 2024. Maybe it’s not a difference between 2020/2024 as I haven’t flown in 2020 much recently. When the problem occurs, it feels broken and not just slow. I’ll report back if I notice a pattern or anything else that might be helpful.
