Alternate selection and weather

For example, planning a flight from LOWI to LSGS in the B38M, I just got LIMC as the alternate.

But the weather is

METAR LIMC 162020Z 10006KT 070V130 9000 DZ OVC005 15/15 Q1021 NOSIG

Which are more or less IFR conditions (I noticed this because NG Charts does indicate the general weather condition of the alternates visually).

Meanwhile LSGG is MVFR and LFLL is VFR, maybe they would make more sense here?

Hi Tim, currently the alternate is evaluated using the TAF, since you normally won’t reach the alternate until a few hours after departure.

The expectation (in the real world) is that if unforecast IFR conditions occur, the airport/country should issue an amended TAF to reflect that. Not sure why they didn’t in this case, but since you’ll almost never reach the alternate inside of an hour from planning time, I feel that it’s better to use the TAF in almost all cases.

For reference, the TAF from your example flight plan was showing legal weather at least:
