Transatlantic Routes

Many real world transatlantic routes, particularly to-from Europe, seem to follow a northerly great circle route over Scotland - possibly to avoid weather conditions en route. Navigraph seems to plan flatter direct routes over southern England. An example would be EDDF-KIAD.
Is it always the case when plotting Navigraph routes that hitting Autoroute always takes a direct route across the Atlantic?
I like to fly real world routes for variation but end up having to manually insert the flightplan using the routes on Flightaware thus losing the advantages of creating a flight plan for direct insertion into the FMC and following a route on the map which is not that on the Chart.
Is there anyway round this, or am I not using the flight planner correctly?
