Minimum Time-At-Cruise or Distance-At-Cruise for Short Routes

Simbrief seems to set cruise altitudes for short routes as high as it can practically go. This results in things like:

  • Climb to FL390
  • Stay there for 10 minutes
  • Descend back down to destination

It would be nice if one could set a parameter that limits the cruise altitude. Some options:

  • Time based: e.g. “Whatever cruise altitude you give me should give me at least 20 minutes in level cruise”
  • Distance based: e.g. “I should be level for at least 150 miles”
  • Descent-control based: e.g., “I want to cruise at an altitude low enough that I don’t have to start my descent in the FIR that’s not my destination’s” (i.e., if I’m flying from Japan to Korea and it’s a short flight across the channel, I would want to pick a cruise altitude that isn’t so high that I need to start my descent while in the Tokyo FIR).

I often refer to FlightAware to see what real-world flights are doing for that route. If FlightAware has a lower altitude, then that is what I put in the FMC. Also, further down in the OFP you will see how to adjust for other altitudes.
