How to update navdata using FMS Manager(Windows Version) in Linux (AIRAC X-Plane 12 Steam Version)

Hello everyone, fellow pilots and sim pilots!

Yesterday, I spent 3-4 hours having a nervous breakdown while trying to update my AIRAC cycle for X-Plane 12. I want to share my solution to help anyone struggling with updating their Navdata.

Steps to Update Navdata in X-Plane 12:

  1. Get a Navigraph Subscription: This allows access to the FMS Manager.
  2. Download Wine: This program helps run Windows applications on other operating systems.
  3. Download FMS Manager for Windows: Currently, this is the only version available. Thanks, Navigraph!
  4. Install FMS Manager Using Wine: Do not launch it immediately after installation.
  5. Configure X-Plane 12 for Compatibility:
  • Open Steam, go to your library, right-click on X-Plane 12, and select ‘Properties’.
  • Under ‘Compatibility’, check the box labeled “force the use of a specific compatibility tool” and select “Proton Experimental”. This changes your game to a Windows version, which FMS Manager can detect (this requires a quick 20MB download).
  1. Launch FMS Manager with Wine: Wine should have created a shortcut or a quick launch option during installation.
  2. Locate X-Plane 12’s Executable File:
  • If you can’t find X-Plane 12’s location, right-click on it in your Steam library, select ‘Manage’ → ‘Browse Local Files’. This opens a window in the file manager; copy the address at the top into FMS Manager’s settings next to X-Plane 12.
  1. Update the Navdata:
  • Once FMS Manager detects your game, it will show in the list with a download button next to it. Click on it to start the download (it might crash initially, but just reopen FMS Manager and try again).
  1. Revert Compatibility Settings:
  • After updating, go back to the properties and uncheck “force the use of a specific compatibility tool” to switch your game back to the native Linux version (approximately a 40MB process).

After these steps, launch the game, and you should no longer see the message “NAV DATA OUT OF DATE”.

Request to Navigraph: Please update and give back access to the Linux version of FMS Manager. The current workaround is cumbersome and was a headache to figure out.

I hope this helps someone!

Hi,
thanks for sharing your solution. I would recommend to open a own topic in our wishlist to this topic. One of our development decision is this wishlist.

Another point are the results of our yearly survey. We might consider Linux support in the future if the demand is sufficient.

Thank you
Richard
