Hello everyone, fellow pilots and sim pilots!
Yesterday, I spent 3-4 hours having a nervous breakdown while trying to update my AIRAC cycle for X-Plane 12. I want to share my solution to help anyone struggling with updating their Navdata.
Steps to Update Navdata in X-Plane 12:
- Get a Navigraph Subscription: This allows access to the FMS Manager.
- Download Wine: This program helps run Windows applications on other operating systems.
- Download FMS Manager for Windows: Currently, this is the only version available. Thanks, Navigraph!
- Install FMS Manager Using Wine: Do not launch it immediately after installation.
- Configure X-Plane 12 for Compatibility:
- Open Steam, go to your library, right-click on X-Plane 12, and select ‘Properties’.
- Under ‘Compatibility’, check the box labeled “force the use of a specific compatibility tool” and select “Proton Experimental”. This changes your game to a Windows version, which FMS Manager can detect (this requires a quick 20MB download).
- Launch FMS Manager with Wine: Wine should have created a shortcut or a quick launch option during installation.
- Locate X-Plane 12’s Executable File:
- If you can’t find X-Plane 12’s location, right-click on it in your Steam library, select ‘Manage’ → ‘Browse Local Files’. This opens a window in the file manager; copy the address at the top into FMS Manager’s settings next to X-Plane 12.
- Update the Navdata:
- Once FMS Manager detects your game, it will show in the list with a download button next to it. Click on it to start the download (it might crash initially, but just reopen FMS Manager and try again).
- Revert Compatibility Settings:
- After updating, go back to the properties and uncheck “force the use of a specific compatibility tool” to switch your game back to the native Linux version (approximately a 40MB process).
After these steps, launch the game, and you should no longer see the message “NAV DATA OUT OF DATE”.
Request to Navigraph: Please update and give back access to the Linux version of FMS Manager. The current workaround is cumbersome and was a headache to figure out.
I hope this helps someone!
