General ILS Problems

I find that in MSFS, generally, i.e., the vast majority of the time, the ILS brings one in too high, not ridiculously high, but pretty much always too high. It is my understanding that it should bring you in to cross the threshold at 50ft RA. Often, this is more like 80-100ft with MSFS.

Is this some kind of issue with the data, or with MSFS?

It is pretty irksome and leads to either slams trying to get the aircraft down on the markers, or floats because you have crossed the threshold too high.

There is a video documenting this here:

I posted it here rather than in the ILS section because that said about specific issues, but I really do find this to be a general problem.

I would love to be able to fix this somehow, I live in constant fear of having to do a CAT III landing as its just impossible to fully trust the ILSs in MSFS.

Hi,
In most of the cases it’s the underlying DEM from the MSFS stock and/or the 3rd party scenery. You see exactly the same behaviour, when you use the stock data only. A typical example for this is/was KLAS.

This is nothing we can fix. What we do is “only” offer the data/real world data but in some cases, the real world data doesn’t match with the MSFS (ie. elevation, runway idents, …). We hope, that the MSFS2024 has more options/possibilities to fix such issues but we don’t know because we are not part of nor are we a partner with MS/ASOBO.

Cheers
Richard
