The easiest way to do the linking is to scan the QR code with your phone/tablet. Have you tried that? In that way you don’t need to manually enter the code.
If you manually type the code you need to be careful that you are typing the exact correct characters. You mention you see an error. Could you please post a screenshot or a photo here showing the error message?
