The center part of the map in the Charts desktop app is pretty blurry and barely readable. Is it possible to sharpen the map? The app itself is perfectly readable, also the upper right corner of the map is readable. Charts are blurry as well but become sharp when zooming in (just one or two clicks).
I tried to change some NVIDIA-related settings as suggested in similar threads, but that did not yield a desirable outcome…
Is this a known issue and are there any fixes?
Hello! Sorry for the late response.
What exact NVIDIA-related settings have you modified? Have you tried resetting all settings (both global and application-specific)?
What driver version and windows version are you on?
Could you try turning this setting off and see if it helps?
This sounds GPU-related. Is the blur consistent for the map, or does it change when you zoom around and/or let it sit? Also, your screenshot does not look blurry. Can you confirm this by comparing the screenshot to what you see “in real life”?
If the blurriness is not visible in the screenshot but is visible on your monitor, that would further support the theory that it is GPU-related.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Kind Regards,
Malte
Thanks for the reply. I can confirm that the blurriness is visible in the picture, also when viewed from another device. Interestingly, the same map is clear when viewed through Simbrief. (Flight planning page/map)
I assume you do not see the blur when using the web application (charts.navigraph.com) either?
Could you try the steps provided in this topic?
Please attempt to reset the settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel to their defaults. It seems this has solved the issue for this other user, but we are not exactly sure what specific setting was the culprit.
Kind Regards,
Malte
Hi, thanks for looking into this issue. The charts webapp and the application are blurry in the center of the display and sharp around it. When displaying the Navigraph overlay in Simbrief, the map appears to be sharp.
That is a fascinating phenomenon!
The difference between our apps and SimBrief is that a heavily customizable data-driven map engine powers the apps, while SimBrief displays a set of pre-rendered images instead. This means that the former (our application and the web app) requires more of your GPU, which is likely where your issue lies.
It is hard for us to track down this issue since we can’t reproduce it ourselves. To be honest, I don’t see any blur at all on your screenshot either! Perhaps compression is hiding it? Should it be obvious?
One way to confirm if this is indeed GPU-related is to disable hardware acceleration in your browser! That should make our app’s performance terrible because it would have to run on your CPU instead of the GPU, but if the picture is clear in that scenario, that would narrow it down slightly!
Kind Regards,
Malte
Turning off Hardware acceleration does unfortunately not make a difference.
It’s not extremely annoying, but certainly noticeable when looking at the charts app. Especially when comparing it to the Simbrief layer or Navigraph map on other devices.
Did turning it off cause a significant difference in performance?
No noticeable difference.
Then you were definitely not successful in disabling hardware acceleration, I’m afraid.
What browser are you using? For Chrome, for example, you need the --disable-gpu
flag.
Kind Regards,
Malte
Completely disabling the GPU and using the onboard graphics doesn’t make a difference either, although the performance is certainly worse.
I’m sorry, but that is not the same thing. Onboard graphics is still a GPU, although a very bad one. Please let me know which browser you are using, and I will help you ensure the app is rendered on the CPU instead.
Best Regards,
Malte
I’m using the default browser, Microsoft edge
Alright, thanks for the additional information!
And you did the following, I assume?
That is highly peculiar. Switching this off makes the performance terrible for me (as expected). Did you restart the browser? Unfortunately, if that is the case, I am at a loss. Do you have any other PC to try this on for comparison?
Kind Regards,
Malte
The performance gets worse, but the blurriness remains the same. It’s not terribly annoying as I can use the app on other devices, but it is certainly interesting that the same map appears sharp in Simbrief and the in-game panel.
I see! Yeah, it is a weird anomaly for sure! Not because it is different from SimBrief though, they’re not at all comparable:
I am happy that you are at peace with the current situation! In the linked topic (see below your original post), the issue was “magically” gone at some point. We’d love to find an actual solution to this, but unfortunately we can’t reproduce it
Here’s to hoping that it will disappear for you too!
Kind Regards,
Malte
