Just to add to this issue… I too was having major drops in frame rate and stuttering while in VR when using the Charts plug-in mainly only when using the FAA Sectionals. I was almost ready to swear off using Charts for VFR when I saw this thread. I did the trick of switching from “day to night” and then back to day and it totally cleared up the frame rate issue!!! So happy I have my sectionals back in the cockpit with me while in VR!!!
Thank you for the additional input! This is a really weird issue…
Also just come across this thread, and can confirm that day/night ‘fix’ works for me also - I’m using World Map.
You’re very welcomed! I wonder how many have run across this problem but randomly fixed it by switching the zoom level or the day/night? ![]()

I am having the same Laggy experience as the others. I tried the Zip file that was posted, but as soon as I zoom it to be able to read the chart, the stutter-fest increases to the point the sim is unusable. As soon as I close the VR Panel, all is smooth again.
I’ll try the day/night toghle tomorrow & report back.
Switching from day to night, and back again did not work for me.
@thetford569 @sep2345 @paulmidd
Do you have to toggle day/night every time that you open the panel?
Are you also using FAA sectionals specifically?
Yes. Only the sectionals.
I have the same issue. Frame rate drops by about 20 FPS when using the FAA sectionals in VR, with the zoom level set to see the sectional. If I change the zoom level, the frame rate sometimes comes back up for a short time, but then returns to the lower level. But it’s also sporadic – sometimes it rises on its own, only to fall again. There is no similar issue with the other map types. I haven’t tried switching between day and night. I have the latest flight simulator updates installed.
I didn’t have time to test this again until today. I just checked it again under the same scenario as before. On the ramp at a highly detailed airport and in any aircraft using VR. I open up Navigraph charts panel and FPS stays at 50fps. When I selected the FAA Sectionals layer it dropped to 17 fps and was a stuttering mess. This continued for minutes and never stopped until I selected the “night” mode on the panel and then the fps instantly recovered back to 50 and I could never get the fps to drop again no matter what I did. I changed it back to day mode and it was fine with the sectionals loaded. I tried all the other map layers and went back to sectionals and still the fps was just fine.
So it at least appears there is a work around for now but obviously that shouldn’t be happening. Opening any of the other layers first does not make the fps drop. It’s just when opening the FAA Sectionals layer.
This is very interesting. We did decide to purchase a VR headset, and this is what it looks like to me:
This looks like normal behavior to me, the FPS seem relatively stable once all map tiles have loaded after a zoom interaction. Before that, there is some lag which is entirely expected from my point of view given that every single thing that happens in the panel blocks the simulator for a short period (no way around this).
Could someone give me an example route that I can use when trying to reproduce the issue? Perhaps even a short recording of what happens from the moment the panel is opened, so that I can see what to expect?
Kind Regards,
Malte
I’m using the Varjo Aero with openxr, not openvr. I’m also using the openxr toolkit. Could it be an issue with openxr vs openvr? Or a conflict with the openxr toolkit? I wonder what other people who are having this issue are using.
Yes I understand the loading behavior and that it’s normal. This just continues beyond that and has not done that until I updated to the Sim Update 15 Beta. Personally I am using an HP Reverb G2 headset with Windows Mixed Reality / Open XR. I am also running the Open XR toolkit which is what I was using to measure the FPS. If I have a chance I will try to record it but that will take me some time to set up.
I also was starting from cold/dark and not mid flight but idk if that has anything to do with it. The route I had set up was KTEB-CYOW however the 2nd time I tried it I just loaded into KTEB on the ramp in a parking spot and didn’t have a route loaded. I never even started up the aircraft, just opened the panel and had that problem until I changed it to night mode and then all was fine afterwards.
Hmm, worth investigating I guess.
Did you run the updated panel version on Sim Update 14 as well? Please delete the currently installed panel version and try this old one temporarily:
I want to rule out the possibility of this being an issue with SU15, if possible.
Was the FAA map preset selected immediately upon loading up the panel, or did you switch to it after it had loaded?
I just re-flew the flight where I was having the FPS drop issues. This time I stripped out all the scenery add-ons and utilities I usually fly with. I only kept Axis and Oh’s (which I use for voice commands) and VFHub (which controls my rudder pedals). I flew the PESim amphibious Maule M7 using the Varjo Aero with OpenXR and OpenXR Toolkit. The flight was 65 nautical miles from KSFF to 66S. On the ground at KFSS with the engine running I was getting 56 FPS. When I started Navigraph Charts (with FAA sectionals) the FPS dropped to 54. When I turned on the TDS GTNXi the FPS dropped to 52. Both of these are pretty normal. I took off and climbed to 5500 feet and the FPS stayed pretty consistent at around 52 FPS. But at 43 miles from my destination the FPS suddenly dropped to 39 FPS. I had made no changes and there was no other stutters (like a scenery loading), just an abrupt drop to 39 FPS. It stayed at 39 FPS for several miles until I zoomed in on the chart, then back out again. The FPS returned to 52 and stayed there until 11 miles from my destination. At that point it dropped from 52 to 32 FPS. Again, I made no changes before the drop. It stayed around 32 until I once again zoomed in and out, at which time it returned to about 52 FPS. It stayed at 52 FPS until I landed and shut down. This is very similar to my last flight, except that time I was unable to recover the FPS by zooming, and it stayed around 28-30 FPS until I landed and shut down. I didn’t try the day-night trick either time. I hope this information is helpful.
Oops – I meant KSFF, not KFSS.
And I am NOT using sim update 15 beta.
That is highly disturbing. There should be no activity going on inside the panel at all when you are not interacting with it, so a sudden drop like that without cause is mind-boggling.
Did you try the old version that I mentioned above?
Kind Regards,
Malte
I haven’t tried the old version. I’ll do that right now.
I replaced the ingamepanels file in my community folder with the v8.3 file that you posted above and flew exactly the same route under all the same conditions. The results are interesting. I started on the ground zoomed into the airport diagram overlapping the FAA sectional. At this zoom level, it’s actually showing the VFR map underneath, not the sectional. I was getting about 52 FPS, just as with my last flight using the latest ingamepanels file. After taking off, I zoomed out to see the sectional, and the FPS immediately dropped to about 35. It stayed there for a couple of minutes until I zoomed back in to the level of the VFR map, then zoomed back out to the level where I could see the sectional again. This process restored the FPS back to around 52. I decided not to interact with the charts at all for the rest of the flight. The FPS stayed around 50-52 for quite a while, but about 20 miles from my destination (in a 65 mile flight) the FPS dropped to 35. It stayed there for about 1-2 minutes, then returned to around 50. It stayed at 50 until about 10 miles out and then did the same thing, dropping to 35 for 1-2 minutes, then returning to 50 for the rest of the flight. After I landed and shut down I decided to try something else. I restarted the simulator and flew the exact same route this time without activating the Navigraph charts panel. I flew the whole way without seeing a drop in FPS, so it is definitely an issue with the charts panel. I also achieved about 3-4 higher FPS than with the charts panel open, but that’s not an issue, since I expect to lose a couple of FPS when using the charts. I’m not surprised that the problem also occurs with the older file, since I remember seeing these kinds of FPS drops as soon as the FAA sectionals were made available. I hope this can be fixed, because I primarily fly VFR and really love having the in-game sectionals!
