I did that, and interestingly, if I load a flight, and then restart it the simlink works. That is curious.

Welcome.
From the Simlink Status page, please let us know the Simlink version, and when the problem started to happen.
I suggest you try a complete Simlink install :

Please use the Windows Programs and Features to uninstall Simlink:

If they exist, delete directories
c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Navigraph\Simlink and
c:\Program Files\Navigraph\Simlink. -
Then, download and install the latest Simlink.

Restart computer
If still a problem, please send us Simlink logs, which are located in the %APPDATA%/Navigraph/Simlink/logs folder.
Also, please post screenshots of any error messages using Guide to posting Screenshots
