As I recall from my RW flying days, IFR cruising altitudes are Even for West compass routes and Odd for East compass routes.
Simbrief is now auto-selecting the opposite (the last several flights). I am flying a west compass route, but it has just assigned an odd altitude. I have entered a correct altitude manually, but this is a very basic rule and I should not have to make such an adjustment.
Not all parts of the world follow the east-west rule. Your latest flight was GMAG-GMML, so you were flying south-westbound. Both the GMMM and GCCC FIRs use a north-south rule, which means that when flying southbound, you should use an odd altitude, whereas northbound flights should use even altitudes.
Interesting. With all my training and experience being for flight in the US (I flew in the 70’s, mainly) I was not aware of this. I’ve known that “transition altitudes” were different than the US selection of 18,000’ MSL in other parts of the world.
Thanks for the enlightenment. When I see the suggested altitude from Simbrief in the future, I’ll take it to heart for even and odd altitude selection.
