Question about editing a flightplan in Simbrief

I am planning a flight in Simbrief which includes a STAR pattern followed by a runway approach. I would like to add some intermediate waypoints between these patterns but Simbrief does not seem to allow this. Can you please tell me if this is possible within Simbrief? I know I can add the waypoints manually within the aircraft FMC but I would prefer adding them in Simbrief so the resulting FMS file is complete. Thanks for your advice on this.

Hi Steve
Do I understand correctly that you want to add more points to the route, after SID and before STAR?
You can manually add these at the correct point in the route settings.

I hope this helps.

No, that is not what I am saying. I would like to add waypoints after the STAR and before the approach. When I try to do this in Simbrief it deletes the STAR pattern entirely, then adds the first intermediate waypoint I have entered. Google Gemini suggests I can do this by adding the last waypoint of the STAR after the STAR title then inserting the new waypoints, or maybe adding a period between these designations. None of those tricks seem to work so I thought I would ask the authors.

In this case here is my route and what I would like to add…

Original route:
KRDU/23L HURIC4 FEBEL DCT GUILD DCT SAWED DCT KALDA SARDI1 KHVN/SOARS.R20

Modified route with additional waypoints following the STAR:
KRDU/23L HURIC4 FEBEL DCT GUILD DCT SAWED DCT KALDA SARDI1 WESTO BAYYS MERIT GREKI KHVN/SOARS.R20

I understand this can be done within the aircraft MCDU but I am curious if there is a way to do it within Simbrief so the final route FMS file contains these additions.

This cannot be done with Simbrief. The closest workaround would be to add the STAR waypoints manually (instead of via the STAR identifier) to the route and add additional waypoints after that.

HURIC4 FEBEL GUILD SAWED KALDA <list of STAR waypoints> <additional waypoints>

Okay.
Here are my thoughts:

  1. The OFP (Off-Flight Plan) is a plan that attempts to represent this as accurately as possible. However, when you’re flying the flight, ATC (Air Traffic Control) might assign you a completely different approach due to weather or other external factors.
  2. The STAR SARDI1 is defined as flying from KALDA to SARDI. Why would you then want to fly “back” to WESTO?

Tim,

Thank you. You confirmed my suspicion. I know there is a “suggestion box” area within the Navigraph website. I would prefer to simply ask you to pass along my suggestion that this capability be added to a future Simbrief update. Adding waypoints between a Star and Approach is a common procedure, at least in the SIM world. It would be useful to be able to do this within Simbrief.

Thanks,

Steve Haines

Hi Steve,

Our development teams take into account the number of votes and content for suggestions in SimBrief Feature Requests or in the Wishlist for other suggestions. Please place your suggestion and vote there for maximum visibility.

Cheers

Not in my experience. IMO whatever work it takes to allow this would not be worthwhile considering how few people it might benefit (but you are of course free to submit a feature request in the suggestion box; I have zero decisional impact on what may or may not get implemented by Navigraph).

Most FMS route file format supplied by Simbrief don’t event contain any procedures (SID, STAR, approach) as those are subject to change by Air Traffic Control instructions and are therefore entered by the pilots via the FMS/MCDU.

In addition, newer FMS formats usually specify procedures via dedicated fields as opposed to a flat list of waypoints, and as such would not support arbitrary waypoints between STAR and approach (as it, it would literally not be possible to do so given the file format specifications).

Thus, in many cases, the ability to specify waypoints between STAR and approach would not give the results you expect.
