Pinch to zoom via touchpad doesn't work properly in the Charts iOS app

Hello,

As of about a month ago, pinch to zoom using the touchpad on the official iPad keyboard (iPad Keyboards - Apple) stopped working in the Charts application for iOS.

Previously, it was possible to zoom both the map and the charts. Currently:

  • It’s not possible to zoom the map using the pinch movement on the touchpad
  • Trying to zoom the chart using touchpad makes the chart completely disappear from the screen (I have to use zoom controls at the top bar to make the chart appear again)

I’m using iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) with iPadOS 17.5.1 (the latest available) and the official iPad keyboard folio with touchpad (as linked above). The Charts app version is the latest at this moment, i.e. 8.35.0 (released yesterday, however this issue has been going on for about a month). The pinch to zoom using touchpad is working properly in other apps.

Thank you!

I am also facing this even with the new update today on iPadOS 18.1

Kindly bumping this up, it’s still an issue. I’m running the latest available Charts app and iOS 18.4.

I don’t have a problem in any other app, it’s only affecting the Charts app. I know it’s kind of a niche functionality, but it would make using the Charts app so much easier for those who have the Magic Keyboard.

Hi…,

I don’t have the Magic Keyboard, but I do have an aftermarket tablet wireless keyboard with touchpad.

On this, using the touchpad with two fingers I can rotate the chart, but not zoom, nor tilt.

Is this the same for you?

The chart stays on screen.

This is on an iPad Pro 13 (M4) running iPadOS 18.3.2.
I can pinch rotate, zoom, and tilt on the iPad screen.

I shall see if this pinch zoom can be implemented on touchpad in Charts iOS .

Cheers
Ian

On this, using the touchpad with two fingers I can rotate the chart, but not zoom, nor tilt.

That’s exactly the behavior that I’m seeing for the main map (the one that you see when you open the app) – rotating works, but nothing else.

For the airport (Jeppesen) charts, any touchpad gesture (including trying to rotate the chart with two fingers) is causing the chart to disappear from the screen. I can try to record this if it would help.

And just to clarify, if I use the same gestures on the screen directly instead of the touchpad, everything works fine, only touchpad gestures are not working.

I can pinch rotate, zoom, and tilt on the iPad screen.

Since I posted this, I upgraded to iPadOS 18.4 but the problem still remains.

I verified my settings, and everything appears to be correct, and the touchpad gestures are working in other apps that I use.

I shall see if this pinch zoom can be implemented on touchpad in Charts iOS .

That would be amazing if possible, it would definitely make using the Charts app much easier if you’re used to the touchpad.

I’m not sure if this is any helpful, but as far as I can tell, the touchpad gestures broke for all apps at the same time around some iPadOS 17 update in May/June 2024. For example, even Google Maps app didn’t have working touchpad gestures after that iPadOS update. Eventually apps got updated and it started working again, so I guess app developers managed to find a way to mitigate whatever that was. Unfortunately, I can’t many references for what’s the actual problem and fix, so I can’t help much there, but I hope you’ll find this helpful.
