Hello Navigraph team! Do you already know when the next courses will be released, specifically Instrument Flight and IFR Approaches?
We generally dont give timelines, unfortunately.
I can say "soonā, though ![]()
I recently completed the Virtual PPL and I have to say it was a blast! Very well done and fun to fly the profiles in the C172 especially with the G1000. When I flew this plane over 50 years ago, I could not ever envision the displays we have today. I particularly enjoyed the location chosen and the cross country flights through the Swiss Alps. I have not done anything resembling visual landmark navigation in years and it was great fun. As an Airline Captain, Instructor Pilot, Check Airmen and FAA Examiner (retired) rated on the B747-400, B747-8, B787, B757, B767, A320, and SD3 with over 32,000 hours total time, I really appreciate the service that Navigraph does for flight simulation. We definitely could not do without it now, it would be like going back to the stone age. To offer this Academy free is also remarkable, this was well structured and well presented. I could get into a debate on pitch/power relationship because in jet aircraft pitch controls rate and power controls speed. Granted they are a fine coordinated dance together and in smaller airplanes I can understand why you say the reverse. In reality, they blend together for the desired performance. In heavy jets, you could get into trouble fast hand flying if your thinking is pitch controls speed and power controls rate, we pitch for rate, simultaneously adjusting power for speed, then check the result, and adjust as necessary. My only partial challenge in the whole course. Maybe would have been nice to include some private pilot stuff like turns about a point, soft and short field takeoffs, rectangular patterns, etc, but certainly not necessary.
Hi there!
Thank you so much for the kind words and feedback, both are so lovely to hear!
The displays, augmentation and automation in current generation aircraft is rather astounding. The days of sweating over NDB approaches with a very questionable ADF are more or less gone (thankfully!) however the current tech does introduce a relatively new issue of over-reliance on the augmentation/automation! With that said, though, weāre trying very hard to get as close to the real thing as humanly possible here. Sometimes the simulator likes to make things difficult with bugs and inconsistencies but through the kind feedback from our amazing community, weāll drive (fly) forward and squash them!
Again, thank you so much for the kind words! the entire Academy team (and the rest of the company) for that matter is pouring so much energy into the course, hearing this will quite literally make their day! <3
I finished my Vppl exams and got my diploma. I had a little trouble with lesson 5 (stalls) and 9 (the pattern). As soon as I saw that there was a walk around for the lacking of stall horn lesson 5 was piece of cake all others was on first or second try. what as miss is some exersices with some cross wind lading andsom exersices on flight planning with fuel planning and flight time where wind and expected ground speed and wind correction has to be calclulated.
The issue with the view height of 72 is actually why I popped in to the forum today. I use a head tracker so I can turn to the left and āduckā a bit to see under the door, but itās irritating.
Also, to my knowledge (admittedly I havenāt tried looking yet) thereās no way to make this setting specific to the aircraft, and in other aircraft it can create problems. For example, I enjoy doing the weekly activities and those often involve the F18, but at a view height of 72, a good chunk of the HUD is hidden. My workaround has been to have a key one set to lower my viewpoint so I can drop it a bit in other aircraft, but that only works until something resets my viewpoint.
Iād be interested to know of anyone has come up with any other workarounds for this. For the time being, Iāve changed the default height to 60, which allows me to lean forward a bit (towards my head tracker) to see the cowling for visual reference, but that means Iāve got two variables to monitor - my ālean forward distanceā and the visual relationship of the cowling to the horizon, and I feel like Iām handicapping myself a little bit.
That said, Iām really enjoying the Academy! Iāve been a simmer for a long time and this is the best training experience Iāve had since the old Rob Machado lessons in FSX. Iāve been working really hard on getting better with my traffic patterns and landings and plan on doing my first solo later today, and then Iāll move on to the back half of the lessons which Iām really looking forward to!
@haga2000 Congratulations! thatās awesome. Regarding your recommendation, currently the scope is essentially how to fly the given lesson. At the moment, other effects such as crosswind correction and granular planning (like fuel calculations) are out of scope. This is absolutely something we are considering for the future, though. I would recommend you make a post in the Academy wishlist, though. We routinely check it and it is quite important for idea inspiration.
@OrionsByte Unfortunately the Academy lesson views are basic. This is to allow the vast majority of students to pick up and start flying immediately. We can, of course, take all this feedback and consider these for the future, like VR, TrackIR/Tobii etc.
Iām really glad youāre enjoying Academy! With the aforementioned Wishlist, all these ideas are reviewed for future iterations, updates and lesson plans ![]()
Finished VFR last week. Amazing course! Very much looking forward to doing the IFR stuff!
Congratulations on the vPPL! Thats great news!
