Actually, when I work a flight from A to B, that is the first thing I do, granted that’s my techcedure. Let’s say I’m doing a 767-300 from LFPG-KMEM.
I know I am going to plan to takeoff from LFPG 09R. So with that in mind, what max weight can I lift from 9R? My APS will tell me that. I dont care about derates, that’s a crew function. In the current SBF Perf Tool, It’s like me telling it I want to takeoff at Struct MTOW of 408.0. Before I have even calculated a route, after the MTOW calculation I know I can lift 408.0 from LFPG off the runway, which happens to be my structural MTOW.
I do the the same thing for my landing runways, including alternates, redispatch airports, EROPS alternates, and so on. For KMEM, I can land at 326.0, which is structural MLDW.
Once all my max weights are known, then I calculate a min fuel track. On this flight, I can eyeball and know I wont have a weight problem with a payload of just 85 and change, but the flight planning system will calculate for me what Pan Am called an adjusted Max Dry Tank Weight - what ZFW could I load onto my airplane and not bust the Max TOW based on how much gas I’m loading.
The structural MZFW for my airplane is 309.0, but with all the gas I am putting on, if I load to 309.0, I’m busting a weight limit. But, if I keep my actual ZFW below in this case 281104, I know I wont go over my MTOW (408000 MTOW - 126900 loaded fuel = 281100.
If I were taking off of LFPG 09L, with its runway limit is 404.7, that would mean my adjusted MZFW would be roughly 277.8; and with a PZFW of 267.4, I’m still good if I had to. Yes the pilots might bitch with the reduced stop margin, but they’ll get over it.
