I am currently using SU4 beta and this problem is definitely worse in the beta but I was having issues with in in SU3 and earlier versions as well. Using the In-Game Panel or the EFB app for Navigraph charts results in a large lag and freeze of MSFS2024. This freeze in SU3 probably lasted for about a minute and a half to 2 minutes. This freeze occurs as the charts app is opening and displaying the chart and flight plan. After this lag and freeze occurs I usually am unloading the old flight plan in there and then trying to load the new one. As I unload there is another long freeze until it catches up and then another freeze as I load the new route. There is also a freeze/lag of up to about 30+ seconds whenever I am first zooming in and setting the zoom level I want on the charts (IFR or VFR sectionals usually).
Once the zoom level is set and I have the map where I want it then it usually works with only a little bit of lag the next time I want to change zoom level. Opening up airport diagrams, approach charts, or SIDs/STARs do not usually have this same lag.
With SU4 beta currently I am experiencing the initial lag/freeze time to sometimes be up to 5 minutes or longer. Today I was more patient than usual and waited probably 10 minutes at one point during a freeze when I was first trying to set up my new flight plan and zoom into my aircraft location. Eventually the freeze stops and FPS/Performance in the sim is mostly fine with minimal drop from when I opened the charts. Sometimes after the freeze the buttons on the EFB in the charts app do not respond (for example I can’t click the location arrow to follow my aircraft or click the option to change maps (IFR/VFR charts).
I know SU4 is in beta but again I was having this same issue on SU3 just shorter lags and freezes but still there and not fun. I fly in VR all the time but I tested this in PC mode earlier today and had the exact same freezes and issues. I also experimented with trying to load the charts into the EFB in the main world map screen before starting a flight and also had the same freezes and lags there. This is becoming unusable for me.
Thanks for any help or for looking into this.
Hello,
Welcome to the forum!
Have you checked this thread on the MSFS forum? It might be worth checking the extra system details within MSFS2024 too.
For the extra stats, to your sim options (in the main screen) and turn on developer mode, then while in game Options > Rendering > Display FPS
I just read through that thread and that’s not what I am experiencing. I always open up the EFB once I am in the aircraft and go straight into loading Navigraph Charts which is where the freezing and lag begins as the Navigraph charts and flight plan are loading into the tablet. I don’t even use the MSFS flight planner and didn’t ever try to open it on the main flight planning screen until I decided to do that as a test to see if it loaded without freezing outside of VR and it did not. The behavior was the same. It’s also not an fps drop but just a complete freeze where I can turn my head and nothing is moving. Once Navigraph loads completely it comes back to the same fps performance that was there before I opened it.
Usually what happens is there will be a big long freeze right as I open Navigraph charts and then it will load the map with the route. Normally this route is an old flight plan so I will click “unload”. As I click that there is another long freeze as it unloads and then if I move or zoom the map there will be another long freeze. I just sit there and wait until my head starts moving smoothly again before I click on anything else in Navigraph.
Then I will load my current flight plan and experience another long freeze and then another freeze as I set the zoom level of the map that I want to use. This is usually zoomed into the first part of my flight plan. Once I have my zoom level set up I can then usually zoom out and pan without the long freezes again. I can change maps just fine then as well. It’s the initial loading and setup that causes all of these freezing issues.
I can use the MSFS default maps and flight planner just fine without these issues. It’s only Navigraph Charts.
Hello,
Thanks a lot for the details.
Some freezing/lag is expected when opening charts on the EFB the first time, though are experiencing the same frequency of freezing/lag at any other time? There should be no freezing/lag when the app is at idle.
What is your computer spec, by the way?
PC Specs - i9 11900k, RTX4090, 64GB RAM
I am not experiencing freezing or lag once everything in Navigraph charts is loaded and my zoom level is set the way I want it. It just takes sometimes 5 minutes of sitting through a frozen screen to get there. And initially if I change the zoom or try to drag the map it will freeze again. Once it’s all set up and left sitting there it works fine for the rest of the flight session. I understand there’s alot of loading going on initially but it just seems like a very long time of freezing. I also felt like it was better prior to SU3.
Hello,
Thanks a lot for the update.
Do you have anti-virus running, VPN, firewall running? If so, I would recommend disabling/whitelisting while you troubleshoot. Also, have you looked into your GPU driver? Are you using the latest version of this? Is there any difference between the current driver you are running versus the previous?
Anti-Virus and firewall are all default Windows 11. I do have some excluded folders in there for FlightSim to keep it from scanning. I don’t use a VPN.
I was using the latest NVIDIA drivers and just a few days ago I rolled back to 577.00 because I had gotten a graphics device crash error after flying for about an hour. I had preciously gotten the same error with any of the 580 series drivers on my machine but the error occurred at the beginning of a session so I thought maybe it was fixed but instead it just didn’t happen until later. So I am currently still rolled back to 577.00. I will say that the length of the freezing with Navigraph seemed longer with the 580 drivers but it’s still happening on 577.00
