I had to abort two attempts to start the Ground Operations Flight. The reason was due to the PFD and MFD are both nearly dark and unusable.
The reason is the Avionics dimming switch is set to a minimum level. The check list does not include setting the dimming switch to a level where the PFD and MFD can be viewed at normal levels.
We’ve investigated and this is a bug in MSFS2020. The real life dim switch should be in the AUTO BRIGHTNESS position when it is on the 9-o’-clock position (the full counter clockwise position). In the auto position, the screen detects ambient light conditions and adjusts brightness automatically, just like your smartphone does when in auto brightness. This means the screen should go to 100% bright in daylight conditions.
This works as intended in MSFS2024 but is incorrectly coded in MSFS2020. In that sim, it appears the position gives the 0% brightness.
We don’t want to change the checklist as that is used in both simulators (and will be used in more sims if we add support down the road) and it is technically correct. However, I will add some text explaining this bug to the in game lesson for MSFS2020.
