I’ve noticed in SimBrief, it will show an ATC Flight Plan routing such as this:
N0486F450 TRUKN2 MOGEE Q124 BVL WAATS5
WAATS5 is a STAR that has a BVL transition option. In this case, is the flight plan clearance from the point BVL direct to WAATS (start of the WAATS5 STAR), or does this assume the entire BVL transition for the WAATS5 STAR?
Typically I’ve seen the dot notation used to imply the STAR transition, i.e., WAATS5.BVL
Hi, the dot notation is an older FAA standard I believe, but everyone is now moving towards the ICAO standard.
In ICAO flight plans (and SimBrief), BVL WAATS5 is equivalent to WAATS5.BVL. The waypoint preceding the STAR is the transition identifier.
As an example, if you wanted to not use the BVL transition and instead join the STAR at WAATS, your route would instead be something like BVL WAATS WAATS5.
Thanks @SimBrief, that’s kind of what I was suspecting. I tried doing some research on this but I can’t seem to find any written guidance on this. Would you happen to know which ICAO document talks about this? I’ve checked the PANS-ATM Doc 4444 (16th Edition), FAA FAR AIM and the FAA En Route Automation Flight Planning Interface Guide Version 3.1 but none of them specifically address STAR transitions.
