I was wondering why the FMS Data Manager is automatically being started with the system. As far as I can see, the purpose is currently only to do periodic program update checks as per the settings where I can disable those.
Questions:
Is that program update check being done when manually starting the FMS Data Manager?
When FMS Data Manager is running in the background, why is it not notifying me of outdated navdata?
Why does FMS Data Manager need Administrator priviledges, just for updating some data files every now and then? Every time I open the application, I get confronted with the UAC check dialog and wonder… Does FMS Data Manager as auto-started by the system actually run in the background to do update checks, if any invocation triggers UAC? Why isn’t it installed in a way that doesn’t need UAC confirmation?
Thank you for your queries regarding FMS DataManager. Please find the responses below:
Yes, FMS DataManager automatically checks for updates whenever the application starts.
If a new addon update becomes available while FMS DataManager is running in the background, you will be notified via a popup message.
FMS DataManager requires administrative privileges because it scans your system to detect the installed Flight Simulator, scans the flight simulator data folder, and manages the installation process for addons. These actions necessitate elevated permissions to ensure proper functionality and access.

I cannot remember EVER having been notified by FMS DM of updated available navdata. My cue always has been the email sent out by Navigraph.
Regarding admin privs: Why does scanning and data installation need admin privs? Are there add-ons that have their data in write-protected paths needing admin privs to write to? I guess scanning doesn’t need admin privs as I cannot envision an add-on expecting navdata in a location that isn’t even readable by a non-priv process.
Why is FMS DM not installed in a way that gains admin privs without UAC prompt?
Given that FMS DM (as far as I remember) never notified me about new navdata being available, I wonder wether FMS DM actually runs in the background doing update checks? Or will it do it’s job only after opening it and confirming the UAC prompt?
FMS DataManager installs addons directly into the simulator, which is often located in the system drive folder. Because of this, the application requires administrative privileges in order to install addons into these protected system directories.
If you are not receiving any notifications for AIRAC cycle updates, please check your operating system’s notification settings and ensure that notifications for FMS DataManager are allowed.

FMS Data Manager is not registered in “Settings" → System → Notifications” as a source of notifications, so there is no disable/enable switch. I do see e.g. Simlink and Simbrief Downloader there and always get the auto-download notifications from it when generating an OFP.
