It would be nice to have a scratchpad template for IFR departure and arrival/approach briefings like this one but with checkboxes and text fields to add some notes:
DEPARTURE BRIEFING (Before Takeoff)
1. TAXI (Ground Phase)
-
Runway: Assigned runway, surface condition (wet/dry), TORA.
-
Clearance: Taxi routing, runway crossings, holding points.
-
Hot Spots: Known airport risk areas on the taxi chart.
2. TAKE-OFF & SID (Airborne Phase)
-
Performance / TOLD: V₁, \(V_{R}\), V₂, flaps, flex temp/thrust.
-
SID: Standard Departure designator, initial headings, radials.
-
Altitudes: Initial cleared altitude (Initial Climb).
-
Restrictions: Speed or level constraints at specific waypoints.
-
Frequencies: Tower, Departure (active/standby preset).
-
Avionics: FD modes (NAV/HDG), autopilot pre-select.
3. EMERGENCY (Abnormal Procedures)
-
Stop (< 100 KT): Reject for any warning or caution.
-
Stop (> 100 KT to V₁): Reject only for fire, engine failure, shear, blocked control.
-
Actions: Captain stops (brakes/reverse), FO radios (“Stop”).
-
Go (> V₁): Continue takeoff. Fly aircraft to safe altitude.
-
EFATO / EOSID: Engine failure flight path, immediate return plan.
-
Terrain: MSA (Minimum Sector Altitude), significant obstacles.
ARRIVAL BRIEFING (Before Top of Descent)
1. STATUS & WEATHER
-
ATIS: Designator, wind, visibility/RVR, clouds, QNH/Altimeter.
-
Aircraft: Estimated landing weight, remaining fuel reserves. [1]
2. STAR / ROUTING
-
STAR Name: Assigned arrival route according to the chart.
-
Constraints: Speed and altitude restrictions (e.g., MAX 250 KT).
-
Topography: High terrain or MSA limits along the arrival track.
3. PROFILE & DESCENT
-
ToD: Calculated Top of Descent point.
-
Anti-Ice: Icing conditions expected during descent?
-
Holdings: Entry strategy, inbound course, turn direction (if required).
APPROACH BRIEFING (Final Approach)
1. SETUP & IDENT
-
Approach Type: ILS, RNP, VOR, runway direction.
-
Chart: Index number and effective date (currency check).
-
Frequencies: NAV (ILS/LOC), final inbound course selected.
-
COM: Approach, Tower, Ground frequencies set in standby.
2. PROFILE & LANDING
-
Feeder / Fixes: Verify platform altitude at the FAF for slope check.
-
Minima: DA/DH or MDA according to the approach chart.
-
Visibility: Required visual reference required to land.
-
Tactics: Level of automation (Autoland vs. manual flight from minimums).
-
Configuration: Landing flaps, autobrake selection (runway performance).
3. MISSED APPROACH & TAXI-IN
-
Go-Around: Lateral/vertical missed approach path, triggers.
-
Exit: Expected runway exit after touchdown.
-
Taxi-In: Planned routing to gate/apron, ground hot spots.
