Simbrief selected cruising altitude

I recently planned the flight - N8311E 14JAN2026 KACJ-KTLH TBM8 after selecting VFR. Simbrief selected FL200 for the flight. Given the short (104 nautical mile) flight and a transition altitude of 18,000 ft., this seems like a totally unnecessary complication by introducing the requirement to talk to ATC. For this flight 6,500 ft. or even 4,500 ft. seems more appropriate. Minimum safe off-route altitude for this flight appears to be 1,700 ft.

I have noticed Simbrief selecting altitudes that don’t work well for the equipment or conditions on several other occasions, such as a FL that the equipment can’t reach or above transition altitude for a short VFR flight.

Also, when I select ‘Import into Charts’, Charts shows the flight as IFR, and I have to manually change it to have it correct.

Am I missing something? Not a RWP, so please excuse any incorrect assumptions.

Thank you!

Hello, SB will try to plan the most fuel efficient route. Sometimes on shorter legs you will need to force a lower altitude.
